Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD Review
The year of HD remakes continues with Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD. Sega has sent us an early release copy to check out and it is funny how a simple game can be so difficult. Many of us have played games like WoW, God of War, even something difficult as Dark Souls series. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD is a whole other beast in itself. How does it measure and will fans be ready to revisit this unique title?
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD revamped
Many of you know the story already where we have our heroes admiring a bunch of golden bananas by a crazed clawed Monkey pirate. Trippy as that sounds it is the plot for our Monkeys to jump into some balls and obtain their sacred banana’s from crazy bosses. It is a cut and dry scenario.
From what some of us expected was more of a motion control experience from I believe how it was in the previous version. We got Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD on the Nintendo Switch. You will have six characters to choose from with each having their own attributes. Gon Gon was the appropriate choice throughout my journey, he was heavy and manageable. Soon enough I had to change tactics and switch to the baby chimp.
This is what you will need to do as you progress further down the line. You need to find the right character for the right solution through all 8 worlds. Each world will have 8 levels with a bonus level and then a final Boss battle. Each stage will have different obstacles as you try to collect all the bananas if you can. There will also be time goals to obtain clear rewards as well as unlocking costumes.
There is still a multiplayer mode for up to 1 to 4 players locally and with the Nintendo switch features, it is a nice touch to be mobile. You all can be frustrated with all at once which this game can be quite frustrating. It seems using the left analog stick is your best bet at maneuvering through the levels. You can use the A button to jump and hopefully move around levels better or maybe find a trick that can help you beat the time.
With the options of Party Games as well as Time Attack missions you will have many ways to keep the party going. There is a lot of replay value that is worth coming back to this remake from the Wii back in 2006.
But what gives Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD different from the classic? Well, that is Decathalon Mode. This new feature will have players challenge one another to obtain the best scores in 10 mini-games. This took a different turn for the series adding some space invaders style game, a sprint title, and many others.
Its an HD remake that looks impressive both on the Nintendo Switch docked and of course mobile. Not going to draw this out or BS you readers. There is not much else to say when it comes to Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD outside of the gameplay. The story is meh, but I get the appeal of the crazy antics and challenge and trust me I did a count on how many times I failed. 135 to be exact and this leads to.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD has its flaws when it comes to the controls. I wish there was an option to adjust the sway which I have to assume you need a steady hand. Even if the different monkey characters still don’t change much of the controls, but yes the baby monkey is the best one to use on all fronts has been well balanced. I do feel a lack of motion support is that it is on the switch. I know that both the Switch and PS4 have motion controls so it could have been something exclusive. It probably would have made it easier.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam today. This is my first time playing Super Monkey Ball and being honest with your readers. It was not a horrible experience and I wish my younger gamer self wasn’t self-absorbed and missed out on this fun title. It is challenging and made me think, have patients and it was fun. At this point in the review, I think I failed over 200 times, but just like Dark Souls, you will get better as you go. It takes time to figure out what you need to work on.
October 29th, 2019 is the release date and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD will be released for $39.99 and it give it the beast seal of BUY IT! I highly recommend picking this up on the Nintendo Switch if you want to take it on mobile. For those that want that nostalgia, this is the game for you and keep in mind you will have an unlock for Sonic the Hedgehog. Thanks for checking out this review and be sure to check out the release. – Beast Out –
